From Canada

For the World

As early exporters of Canadian liquid petroleum gas (LPG) to overseas markets, we know what it takes to invest, build and grow Canada’s position on the global stage.

Designed to deliver

At AltaGas, we’re focused on connecting Canadian produced LPG to competitive markets in Asia. Throughout our midstream value chain, we gather, process and transport gas and NGLs through our system, exporting propane and butane from Northwest British Columbia and Washington State through our open-access terminals to growing markets in Asia.

Our West Coast Advantage

We safely and reliably connect the energy the world needs from the West Coast. Our open-access export facilities in British Columbia and south of the border in Washington State deliver Canadian liquid petroleum gas (LPG) to in-demand global markets. And that journey is ~50% faster than other gulf routes—which means it’s not just faster, but also more efficient.

With the construction of the Ridley Island Energy Export Facility (REEF) with our partner Vopak, we’re enabling market growth in Asian markets and strengthening economic prosperity here at home.

Open access 101

Our terminals compete against other markets (domestic sales or exports from the U.S.) to provide Canadian producers with options to get their product to the best markets.

Our recent long-term agreement with Pembina Pipeline highlights the strength of our open-access model, enabling producers to leverage our export terminals to reach premium markets in Asia. Through this agreement, Pembina has secured 30,000 barrels per day of propane export capacity at our Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal (RIPET) and the future Ridley Island Energy Export Facility (REEF), reinforcing our commitment to providing flexible, competitive, and reliable global market access for Canadian energy.

Meet our open-access terminals

Through our open-access terminals, we connect 70+ Canadian LPG producers and aggregators to buyers in Asia. In 2024, we exported ~122,000 bbls/d globally.

Optimization 1: A small project to optimize throughput with the addition of a storage vessel, compressors, and ancillary equipment. This will be delivered after REEF in-service date.

Optimization 2: A long-term project to further increase LPG throughput that includes refrigeration, additional storage, compression, and ancillary equipment. Timing will be dependent on market demand and available LPG supply.

Future Expansion: A long-term project with new phases to add further export capacity. This scope is still being determined, but REEF’s diversification potential can export methanol and other bulk liquids, not just LPG. Timing will be dependent on market demand and available LPG supply.

Prince Rupert: our proud shared story

Ten years ago, AltaGas set its sights on Prince Rupert as a key port to meet the rising global demand for LPG and we invested in opportunity and potential for economic growth and prosperity for the region. With our joint venture partner, Vopak, we began to lay the foundation for long-term, responsible growth in Prince Rupert, a key port city on Canada’s West Coast.

Together, we invested in long-life infrastructure with a plan focused on creating and sharing the benefits, in our local community, and here in Canada.

Sharing the benefits with Indigenous communities

Projects must be rooted in respectful valued relationships. That means Indigenous communities are not just included—they help lead the way in how we build and grow, responsibly.

Our commitment is clear: we honour the agreements made with our Indigenous partners and remain focused on delivering meaningful economic benefits through our mutual benefit agreements on RIPET and REEF. Through the procurement of Indigenous-owned services and partnerships, long-term job creation and training opportunities, and sustained community investment, we are committed to advancing Indigenous prosperity and fostering meaningful partnerships every step of the way.

Safety and environmental stewardship on Ridley Island

Emergency response

Our export facilities operate under comprehensive Emergency Response Plans (ERPs), designed to protect our people, the environment we work in and open-access terminals and the infrastructure which it is surrounded by.

These plans are tested to provide robust incident management.

Advanced safety systems

With years of experience operating export facilities, we've built them with world-class safety systems to ensure safe, reliable performance. Some of those systems include:

Process safety management: Identify and manage risks through robust design controls, engineered safeguards, and operational practices that prevent loss of containment.

Safety and loss management: Apply rigorous, traceable installation, maintenance, monitoring, and inspection protocols to ensure long-term asset safety, integrity, and reliability.

International and maritime certifications

We are committed to upholding global standards in maritime safety and compliance. Our open-access terminals are designed and operated to meet—and often exceed—international certifications and regulatory requirements.

From environmental assessment and permitting to operational integrity and transparency, we build and operate to the highest standards of safety, integrity, and performance

Mitigating our environmental impact

Our RIPET facility is Green Marine certified, a voluntary, third-party environmental certification program that promotes sustainable maritime operations.

We’ve achieved high scores across key performance indicators including:

  • Spill prevention and stormwater management
  • Air emissions
  • Environmental leadership
  • Community relations
